Periodontics
Gum disease (periodontal disease) is an infection of the gums and bone caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that adheres to teeth.  Plaque forms constantly on teeth and can build up if it is not removed through daily cleaning.  The bacteria in plaque produce toxins, or poisons, that can irritate your gums.  In the early stages of gum disease, called gingivitis, gums may swell, turn red and bleed easily.  Eventually, these toxins can cause the tissues to separate from the tooth and form deepened spaces called pockets.  If left untreated, the disease can progress to the bone.  In later stages of the disease, called periodontitis, the bone and soft tissues that support the teeth can be destroyed.  This can cause the teeth to become loose, fall out, or have to be removed by a dentist.

Periodontal disease can occur at any age, but is most common among adults.  In fact, three out of four adults are affected by it at some point in their lives.  Women are especially susceptible to periodontal disease at various stages of life.  Hormonal changes can affect the blood supply to the gums, and response to irritants from plaque may be exaggerated.  If you are already prone to periodontal disease, you may find the problem worsening at times.

Oral Cancer Detection
Fortunately, most oral “sores” or “lesions” are not harmful.  But a small number are dangerous, and if not identified early, they may progress to a more advanced stage.  When oral cancer is detected early, it can be completely cured.

Oral cancer is a devastating disease when detected in its later stages.  Late stage treatment usually involves major facial surgery with only half of such patients surviving past five years.  Therefore, it is important to visit regularly so that dangerous oral lesions can be detected at an early, easily curable stage.
